AI for Laboratory Operations is a unified ecosystem of AI tools that transforms raw data into actionable, evidence-backed intelligence in support of ORNL Operations and associated stakeholders.
Led by Principal Investigator Dr. Tirthankar Ghosal (Staff Scientist), the research and development team includes Dr. Sanjay Das (Postdoctoral Researcher; lead R&D personnel), Dr. Ran Edgeway (PhD GRO intern), and Dr. Ethan Seefried (Postdoctoral Researcher), from the Learning Systems group, Computer Science and Mathematics Division (CSMD), Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD).
Integral collaborators from ORNL Operations include Ryan Burchfield, Lauren Deck, Alan Guy, Gavin Wiggins, and 25+ subject-matter experts across ORNL Operations divisions.
A software team from ITSD supports the AI team in making the tools enterprise-ready. PI Ghosal holds regular one-to-one meetings with ITSD and Operations leadership to coordinate tool progress and launch.
PI Ghosal and ITSD colleagues presented and demonstrated in-progress tools at the 2nd AI4Ops Symposium, organized by LANL in Santa Fe.
ORNL will organize the third AI4Ops Symposium in 2027.
